I've always loved Robin Hood, aside from King Arthur(whose tales I've always been fond of as well) he's been a poster child for medieval England or at least the mythology surronding the era and I can't remember a time I wasn't fasinated by either. I've seen alot of movies about the character and enjoyed them, even the bad ones. My personal favorite is probably the 1991 version with Patrick Burgin and Uma Thurman, while not having Prince John and Sheriff of Nottingham as his antagonists, the core idea of the story was the same. It was a more historically accurate take on the character if such a thing can really exist. A few weeks ago I read a story that Sienna Miller had dropped from the Maid Marion role of a new take on the legend, and Cate Blanchett has stepped in. I started reading more about it and became interested and worried at the same time. As I scowered the web for info about it I found out that it's been in pre-production since 2007. It's being directed by Ridely Scott whose movies have been hit or miss as of late and that's part of what has me worried. Russell Crowe is protraying Robin Hood. Alot of people don't like him but I've never really had a problem with him and have enjoyed alot of his work.
Now what peaked my interest in it is that the original working title was Nottingham, and the story was centered more on the Sheriff of Nottingham's(also played by Crowe) POV as the protagonist and Robin Hood shown in a more villianous light. As more casting news has begun to surface, with it has come word of changes. Now it's titled a genaric 'Robin Hood' and even though it's not updated on the IMDB page Crowe is back to single role duty as Robin. The character is set to start out as an archer in Richard's army at the end of The Crusade and go from there. The Sheriff, being played by whoever now, is being relegated to a lesser, mid-level role and Scott has opted to go more for a historical slant by having the conquering Normans and therefore France as the main villian, so to speak, which is similar to the '91 version.
Filming starts in April for a tenative May 2010 release. I'm almost anxious about how this whole thing is going to turn out. The original concept was a new look at the material and it had me really excited, but the changes might work too, just not as well and that has me worried. The only thing I can think of to tip the scales in favor of remaining optomistic is the fact that it was written by the same guys who wrote Demon Knight, which was badass. I really want a trailer or at least screenshots of Russell Crowe unleashing some English longbow fury on a few Norman nobles to help me make up my mind.
