You know, that article fails to mention one important fact: did the kid get poor grades after he was forced to murder his hamster?
I know I would have done so well in school if my dad had done the same with me, and i had shit-tons of hamsters when i was a kid. The backyard of the house i grew up in was like fucking Auschwitz from all the hamsters that died from the time i was 6 until 13.
